Food Insecurity is a real challenge in our community with over 700,000 people just in Victoria living below the poverty line. This problem has been amplified by COVID-19 and has left many families in real need of help and support. In the absence of a normal 2020, we all challenged ourselves to find a way to help our immediate community.
In a partnership between the Melbourne Ice Foundation and 300 Blankets, we have developed a weekly program to deliver food packages to families and individuals experiencing hardship. Every Saturday morning teams of volunteers travel across Melbourne to ensure that families have food in their pantries and know they are in a community that cares.
The concept just evolved where our fans could buy a Care Package and nominate a preferred recipient. The program was launched on May 14, 2020. From then on, we quickly enlisted some trusted help and set an initial target of 100 packs. We have now gone much broader than we could have imagined, and now delivered well over 800 packs to Melbourne families and individuals in most need.
The Melbourne Ice Foundation is the community engagement arm of The Melbourne Ice Hockey Club, Melbourne's pre-eminent Ice Hockey Team, and proud member of the Australian Ice Hockey League [AIHL].

Woolworths, The District, Docklands have also joined us as our supermarket partner to provision, pick and pack the produce every Saturday morning, ready for the 300Blankets volunteers to do their deliveries.
We use about 10 standard categories - Bread, Sugar, Tea or Coffee, Milk, Eggs, Tinned Goods, Soups and Pasta. On Wednesday each week, we go to Woolies and select the specials and best deals within the $39.90 budget.
The Woolworths staff do all picking and packing on Friday Night every week so our packs are ready for collection every Saturday Morning.
We now have working relationships with 5-6 support agencies [eg; Co Health] across Melbourne to identify families in most need of help.
Yes, our volunteers were fully protected as Care Workers and we have been able to maintain contactless delivery to all families.
300Blankets have a steady flow of enthusiastic volunteers who love helping people in need. We are grateful for every person who donates their time to help others during this crisis.
Every Saturday morning, we gather at The Melbourne Ice Shop in the Docklands around 8.00am. to pick up the packs from Woolies and then distribute to the volunteers who have planned and personal routes. All orders are delivered by midday.
